The top priority for most magazine executives today seems to be building iPad apps. Yet the user experience of a print magazine is unmatchable: they’re cheap, never out of battery charge, not a target for thieves and they have twice the screen space when spread as an iPad screen. Magazines might have a place in our connected future, but they risk losing a generation if they don’t modernize their subscription systems instead of trying to compete with Angry Birds.

Future partners Microsoft for interactive Xbox magazine

Future has partnered with Microsoft and UM London to create an interactive edition of Xbox 360: The Official Xbox Magazine. Focused on the hotly anticipated game Gears of War 3, the magazine features seven digital ‘Cog Tag’ watermarks that can be scanned using the Digital Space app for smartphones. Each digital watermark leads the reader to one of seven Gears of War 3 videos, including an exclusive interview with the developer Epic Games.

News of the World final sells 3.8m

News International said: “Retailers were hit by unprecedented demand as people swept up copies of the newspaper, which included a 48-page souvenir pullout charting some of the paper’s famous scoops over its 168-year history. Advertising space in the paper was provided free to good causes, and 74 pence from the £1 cover price of every copy sold in the UK will be split equally between three charities: Barnado’s, The Force’s Children’s Trust and the military projects at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity.

More magazine is set to produce a co-created Facebook issue to celebrate hitting 100,000 followers on the social networking site. The title’s staff have already started the editorial planning process, posing questions to Facebook fans, including choosing the cover star and contributing to regular features. Five Facebok fans will also be recruited to come into the office and work directly on the pages with the editorial team.
Grazia Royal Wedding Issue
